Prof Thushara Matthias graduated with first class honors and 09 distinctions from the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 2009 and was placed first in the all-island merit list. She completed her MD in Medicine in 2015 and was awarded the FRCP London in 2021 and board-certified as a consultant physician in 2017. She trained in acute medicine at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, UK, after which she joined the Department of Medicine at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and works as a consultant physician attached to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital.
Prof Matthias’s academic interests include cardiovascular disease (CVD), lipids, especially familial hypercholesterolemia, and internal medicine. Her research focuses on the identification and management of dyslipidemia, integration of real-world data into clinical practice, and identifying and addressing barriers in LMIC settings for CVD care. She has more than 70 publications in peer-reviewed and indexed journals, including The Lancet, PLOS One, and BMJ Open, and has presented her work at national and international forums. She has also received research awards for her scientific work, including the NRC Research Awards.
She presently functions as the National Lead Investigator of Sri Lanka for EAS FSHC (The European Atherosclerosis Society Familial Hypercholesterolemia Studies Collaboration).
