Profile

Dr Melissa Ooi is currently a Senior Consultant at the Department of Haematology, National University Cancer Institute Singapore, Visiting Consultant at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Assistant Professor of Medicine at YLLSoM, National University of Singapore. She underwent medical and haematology training in Ireland where she obtained her postgraduate qualification. During her speciality training, she was awarded an International Research Fellowship award and underwent a research fellowship in the Jerome Lipper Multiple Myeloma Center in Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. During her time in USA, she was awarded the SPORE Myeloma Career Development Award. This research fellowship resulted in publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations in international meetings. Dr Ooi was awarded her PhD from Dublin City University.

Dr Ooi has continued to pursue her research interest in myeloma, leukaemia and myelodysplasia. Her research interest centres on geriatric haematology cancer patients. Since working in Singapore, she has been the recipient of three national and several institutional peer-reviewed grants with a total funding of over S$1.9 million. Dr Ooi is an active principal investigator in multi-centre clinical trials. She is currently the leukaemia group lead in National University Cancer Institute of Singapore. She is also a member of the Asian Myeloma Network, Asian Myeloid Working Group and Asia-Pacific Leukemia Consortium.

Aside from patient care, Dr Ooi is an advocate for patient safety and patient experience. She is also involved in shaping the new generation of doctors as a lecturer of haematology in undergraduate studies and a core faculty in the postgraduate haematology programme.
