Prof Honda graduated from Kobe University School of Medicine, Japan, and obtained M.D. in 1991. He also obtained Ph.D. from Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine in 1996 for the thesis regarding GABA transporter in the retina. He completed his post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California in 2001, where he engaged in disclosing the aging mechanism of retinal pigment epithelium. He raised up his career as an assistant professor, an associate professor of Kobe University and became to a professor and chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Osaka City University Graduate School of Medicine in 2018.

Prof. Honda has published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications covering both clinical and basic research in the retina. He is an expert of ophthalmic genetics, especially of age-related macular degeneration and related diseases. He has won a number of public and private grants in his career. He is also a skilful vitreo-retinal surgeon and has done numerous surgeries.
