Dr Chan obtained his MBBS medical degree at King’s College London, University of London in 2001 and attained his fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and the College of Surgeons, Hong Kong in 2008.   He became a faculty member for the Division of Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery, & Liver Transplantation in 2009, and was promoted to be the Clinical Associate Professor, and Honorary Consultant in Queen Mary Hospital and HKU-Shenzhen Hospital in 2016.  

Dr Chan is specialized in living donor liver transplantation and oncological liver surgery.  He pioneered the application of ALPPS for hepatocellular carcinoma and 3D laparoscopy for major hepatectomy.  He has published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals including Annals of Surgery, Liver Transplantation, Transplantation and Surgery, and a number of book chapters.  He has delivered in numerous invited and plenary lectures in various regional as well as international meetings, and is a member of the editorial board for the World Journal of Surgery. 

Dr Chan is currently the President of Asian Surgical Association, a member for the International Liver Transplant Society, and a council member for the Hong Kong Society of Transplantation, and Hong kong Society of Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery.  He is also a panel member for the acute-on-chronic liver failure consortium of the Asia-Pacific Association of Study of Liver (APASL).
