SCRI Research

SCRI currently manages over 30 studies including investigator-initiated academic trials, single and multiple-site studies, and multi-national-site studies.  Research areas include epidemiology, dentistry, nutrition, psychiatry, surgery and paediatrics. Specific disease areas include oncology, ophthalmology, cardiology, nephrology and neurology.

Oncology 


  • Aspirin for stage III and high risk stage II colorectal cancer
  • Placebo versus appetite enhancing medication for inoperable liver cancer
  • A study to evaluate efficacy of radioactive iodine as adjuvant therapy for liver cancer post surgery v/s conventional follow-up treatment (no adjuvant therapy after surgery)
  • Phase I/II study of radiotherapy plus multi-kinase inhibtor as first line treatment in patients with non-resectable primary liver cancer
  • Frequent but low dose of combined treatment regime ( dexamethasone, thalidomide & zmeta ) for multiple myeloma
  • A study comparing two non-steroid based anti-inflammatory drugs for the treatment of a heart problem involving abnormal blood flow in very premature infants.
  • Effects of (monoclonal) antibody in combination with chemotherapy and radiotherapy for head and neck cancer treatment
  • Evidence-synthesis and modelling of hepatocellular cancer clinical management data for improving patient outcomes and health services planning.
  • A study to compare the impact of high dose radiation therapy (through radiotherapy devices) to an anti-cancer drug for overall survival in patients with advanced liver cancer.
  • Assessing the effects of an immunosuppressant in combination with a (monoclonal) antibody for the treatment of advanced liver cancer
  • An evaluation of a combination treatment composed of three chemotherapeutic agents and an anti-viral protein in liver cancer.

 

Ophthalmology


  • A prophylactic laser vs. no treatment in subject with asymptomatic narrow angles.
  • A study to compare 2 treatments: laser and surgery in glucoma
  • To establish an optimal dose of atropine, for routine myopia treatment in children
     

Cardiology


  • Comparison of vasopressin and adrenaline injections for cardiac arrest
  • Comparing the capacity of high versus low energy defibrillation (shock) in patients with heart attack
  • To compare the incidence of adverse cardiac events among patients discharged after evaluation through ACTION (acute chest pain treatment and evaluation) and control group

 

Nephrology


  • Effectiveness of antibody for prevention of rejection in kidney transplant patients (pilot study)
  • Effectiveness of antibody for prevention of rejection in kidney transplant patients (phase II study)
  • A preventive treatment regime in cardiac catherisation subjects to reduce to side effects of contrast.

 

Nutrition 


  • Study extension on child's allergic incidence till 5 years old, who receive milk with or without probiotics for the first 6 months 
  • A follow-up to 5 years study two groups of children will be compared with one group of children fed beneficial bacteria and the other without to see the beneficial bacteria's influence on allergic disease.

  • An observational study to document incidence of allergies and evaluate stool microbiota between babies from Singapore & Indonesia
  • An observational study evaluating effect of breastmilk & dietary fatty acid on allergy in babies
  • A review of guidelines for looking at the role of ‘body's protective system (immunology) in a nerve disorder (Multiple Sclerosis). This review is conducted every three years (Triennial) by ‘American' Academy of Neurology (AAN)

 

Paediatrics


  • Used of antibiotic in reducing incidence of chronic lung disease in infant who chronized with bacteria and low birth weight

 

Orthopaedics 


  • A study on patients requiring knee joint cartilage repair will be implanted with a transplant system derived from the same affected patient's body(cells) in comparison to the conventional method

 

Infectious Disease


  • A study to determine the efficacy of Chloroquine (anti-malarial drug) in the prevention of influenza
  • A study aims to compare two dengue fever patient groups with reduced platelet counts and without bleeding; one with supportive care and platelet transfusion and the other with just supportive care to determine the benefits of platelet transfusion.
